The Retrieval Nurse Practitioner (RNP) programme started at the Evelina Children’s Hospital PICU, part of Guys and St Thomas’s in 2003.
The programme is designed to develop the clinical assessment and procedural skills, as well as leadership and communication skills, of experienced PICU and retrieval nurses. The endpoint is to produce independent advanced nurse practitioners for the management of critically ill children. This has opened up an exciting and challenging clinical pathway for senior nurses, which was previously unavailable.
